I traveled throughout Italy during a trip to Europe in 1982. The itinerary followed by my tour group was designed to show us most of the country. After entering Italy from Yugoslavia, we first visited Venice and then went down the east coast to Bari, where we took a ferry to Greece. After a few days in Greece, we returned to Bari and traveled overland to Italy's capital, Rome. From there, we traveled south to the Naples area, where we visited the Isle of Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and the ancient ruins of Pompeii. We then proceeded north, where we visited Florence and Pisa, before finally leaving Italy at the French border.
What was surprising to me about Italy was how each area, and even each city, has its own unique characteristics in landscape, architecture, food, and culture. This variety makes Italy an interesting country to visit, and offers a lot for the curious traveler to see and experience.
Since my last visit in 1982, I have returned to Italy only to make connections through Malpensa International Airport on my way to other destinations.
