"Croatia" Croatia by traveldave

In the summer of 1982, I passed through what was then northern Yugoslavia, long before the political, military, and ethnic problems which recently split the country apart. At the time, Yugoslavia was a relatively peaceful country with no hint of the difficulties that were to come. The people were friendly and curious about Westerners. The areas I visited then are today part of the nations of Croatia and Slovenia.

The areas through which I passed were mainly agricultural, and the farmers used technology from the previous century. Both men and women--mostly older people--were cutting hay on the hillsides with sickles. Others were carrying the hay to be loaded onto horse-drawn carts which seemed to have the right-of-way on the narrow mountain roads.

The countryside was some of the most beautiful I have seen anywhere. It is a mountainous and hilly area, and the hills are covered with green fields, pastures, and forests.

Unfortunately, the film did not advance in my camera when I was in Croatia, so I do not have any pictures or tips to document my travels there.
