B O V E C - my favourite place in Slovenia

by canaglic - last update: Apr 23, 2003

Bovsko is a mountainous region in the Julian Alps, situated in the extreme nortwestern corner of Slovenia. Bovsko can be reached by crossing the mountain passes of Predel, Vrsic: and Uceja, whereas the most important access to the region is along the Soca valley.

The central locality in the Bovsko region is the village of Bovec. It lies on a height of 483 m above sea level and is situated 140 km from Ljubljana, 72 km from Nova Gorica and 17 km from the Italian border. Towering above Bovec is the mighty Kanin range, where Slovenia's only high alpine ski center is located. It's thick coat of snow enables skiing until the end of May, sometimes even longer.

Bovec - Kanin

BOVEC - despite its low altitude, Bovec, famous throughout the world for the marvellous Soca, is a genuine Alpine center. Its special position and the valley opening down towards the sea give it a special charm and a diverity seldom found elsewhere.

KANIN - is the only ski resort in Slovenia where the skiing grounds extend above 2000m. The skiing season lasts from December until the 1st May holidays. Kanin is a true high-mountain ski resort, far above the tree-line in a real Alpine atmosphere. Due to the altitude the pistes seldom freeze and offer the pleasure of skiiing on dry snow during most of the winter. Another special feature of Kanin is its sunny position and magnificent view far into the heart of the Alps and towards the Mediterranean. When the visibility is good one can even count the ships in the Bay of Trieste.
In the valley, on the opposite bank of the beautiful river Soca, only a short walk from Bovec, lies the village of Cezsoca.

Alternative activities

In Bovec and the entire Soca Valley, already well-known as a destination for active turists, there is a wide choice of alternative possibilities during the winter, renging from pleasant walks and cycling in the valley to more exciting snow raft. Regular paragliding "trips" are organised from Kanin down to the valley. Another exquisite experience is night sledging down the Alpine Mangart road. The side valleys and the areas at the feet of the high peaks are all a paradise for fans of frozen waterfall climbing. Cross-country skiing fans can enjoy over 60 km of arranged tracks in Bovec and nearby Tarvisio.
