Mostar is administrative, economic and cultural seat of Herzegovina. The multiethnic character has been preserved, in spite of ethnical cleansing which has been effectuated during the war conflicts.
Before the war according to the population census from 1991 in Mostar used to live inhabitamts, out of them bosniacs, Croats, Serbs.
Mostar was famous as the touristic city too with a large number of cultural-historical monuments, among them certainly most important the Old Bridge, built in 1566.
