Hilo is a working city whereas Kailua-Kona is more touristy. Here you will see families and more of a spectrum of ages. There is a fish auction early in the morning to see where the fishermen bring their catch in to be bid on by restaurants - but you can buy from them too. Flowers and fruits are sold at the downtown market Wednesday and Saturday. The Big Island is famous for its orchids. The easiest access to Volcanoes National Park and the Mauna Kea Observatories is from here. The picture is of Coconut Island in Hilo Bay.
