  • The Tiber River
Pictured here is the southern end of the Isola Tiberina, the island in the Tiber River in Rome and the ruins of an old Roman bridge that was here. The river is now at least 50 feet below the level it was in Roman times and presently not an attractive area for walking although there are stairs leading down.

    Christian Rome: St. Paul Church

  • St. Paul Church

Correctly named Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura. This is by far the most beautiful church in Rome. The Vatican is but a huge barn compared to the intricate decorative walls fashioned here. If you have visited the Vatican first, you will find that the scale here allows your eye to take in and appreciate this church better although it is very large itself. They hang the Pope's pictures here and there is only room for eight more. The second coming soon follows!

  • The Appian Way

Built in 312BC the Via Appia is the oldest Roman road that went south towards Naples. Today it is hardly used. There is a restaurant out this way, a church with a healthy cloister of nuns, and of course the catacombs. After the hustle and bustle of Rome, this is a great peaceful walk into the countryside where you will find farmers cutting hay in the Circus of Maxentius. In the photo to the left of the rider's helmet on the horizon you can just barely make out the towers of the old Roman gate, Porta San Sabastiano. When you walk from the gate you will see that they use candles as streetlights along the Via Appia Antica.
