I USED TO FLY OUT BY HELICOPTER FROM DEN HELDER TO WORK ON A DUTCH OIL RIG CALLED ELF K5.
The port of Den Helder has a direct, open connection to the North Sea.
An advantage of this is that the port is easily accessible even in extreme weather conditions.
The outer and inner harbours have adequate loading and unloading facilities, storage facilities and opportunities for construction for offshore companies.
In this role of offshore port Den Helder is a vital link in the logistics chain for the offshore oil & gas industry.
Oil companies including Occidental, NAM, Elf Petroland, Conoco, Clyde, Wintershall and Amoco have focused activities in the port area, which houses several bases for supplying drilling rigs and production platforms in the North Sea.
The port is also an ideal location for carrying out inspection, repair and maintenance work, on jack-up drilling rigs and accommodation platforms. Over the last few years, more than 30 rigs have undergone these operations in Den Helder, together with one major conversion from drilling rig to accommodation platform.
