Explore It Instead of Just Passing Through Coming from California as I am, New Mexico is seen by a lot of people in my little corner of the world as a place you go through on the way to somewhere else. A few years ago, however, I had a chance to spend a lot of time there because of work and I discovered what a nice place it is. Yes, there is a lot of nothing out there but the cities offer a unique culture you can't really experience anywhere else.
Albuquerque is where most people arrive into New Mexico - it's right on Interstate 40 and the main airport and train station are here as well. It's a good place to start. There are many chances to meet Native Americans in town, there's a great national park, and the hot air ballooning is top notch. There's a balloon festival every fall.
Santa Fe is just about an hour's drive north and it is beautiful. The houses and other buildings are all in that Santa Fe style. I wasn't sure what to expect but they really all do look like that and instead of being a case of "too much of a good thing" it comes off as charming, I thought. Santa Fe also has a lot of historical buildings that can be toured and some great shopping. |
