ACAPULCO - Aged Paradise - Acapulco

Once upon a time, Acapulco was the stunning beautiful playground for the rich and famous. Hollywood legends celebrated their silver-screen successes by dancing the Mexican nights away in its chic clubs, and the privileged few spent their honeymoons lounging on its attractive shores. But time passes and fairy tales fade; today, Acapulco is a mere shadow of the beautiful, relaxing retreat in once was. The city now consists of the crowded beach flanked by the tighty-packed 14-story hotels, and the slum that starts behind them continues up the hill. This grimmer Acapulco was born when the wealthy stopped vacationing here, and the hotel market could not longer keep pace with the waves of immigrants drawn seaward by the prospect of plentiful pesos. Everyone in Acapulco is still driven by money, though now by the need to earn it rather than to spend it. Persistent cabbies and peddlers of everything from bubble gum to "free information" run at tourists like eager bulls. Though the high-rise hotels crowding the waterfront have lost the flush of youth, a roster full of festivals and beautification projects promise a revamped Acapulco. Perhaps it's best to visit the city at night, when darkness shrouds the grime and street lamps evoke Acapulco's fairy tale past.
