Mazatlan, capital of the state of Sinaloa on the Pacific coast of Mexican mainland got it's name from the native language "Nahuatl" and means "Place of the deer". My first question was; "Where is the deer". Apparently the only deer that is left, or is populating the beaches and bars these days are American tourists. However, in 1531 the city's habor was chosen as the launching pad for Spanish galleons. In 1859 the town became the capital of Sinaloa and made history during the Mexican Revolution when it became only the second city ever the be shelled from air. Today we certainly must distinguish between Old Mazatlan and the Zona Dorada with all the bog hotels, bars and clubs.
