Welcome to San Diego

by daBertl - last update: Sep 3, 2001

As you may know from my past sites, I am not telling you that much about tourist attractions and sights since there is more talented people that write books and guides about it. What I tell you is my experience with the locations, what I like and what I dislike.

San Diego is surely one of the States’ most beautiful cities. Not only it has great beaches, but also people are very friendly and everybody seemed to be quite relaxed as well. It may be the closeness to the border; actually San Diego is basically the border to Mexico, and the therefore huge influence of Mexican culture in the city and its people. Spanish is not only the main language of the region but all signs and instructions are given in Spanish besides English.

San Diego is quite big but due to the existence of its big neighbor Los Angeles often considered as only the small brother. Perhaps the downtown area is not the biggest, but San Diego is spread out pretty wide and it takes quite some time to cross the city from East to West or North to South. The downtown area is really beautiful, nicely maintained, clean and friendly. You will find many lovely restaurants and decent stores. What you will yet not find as frequently as in many other American cities are fast food restaurants. Compared to New York, Chicago or L.A. where you have the big “M” shining on each corner, San Diego’s center is pretty much kept junk-food free.

Orientation downtown is not a problem at all and even if you need to get to some place else the signage for highways is well organized. I mention this since I had pretty bad experiences in other cities and therefore appreciate these facilities very much.
