Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): The Golden Pavillion
  • Tip Rating:
  • This has a temple which has Gold leaf all around it. The gardens here are very lush and well established and it is obvious that they are centurys old. The temple with it's phoenix on the top looks really like you are in Japan a century from now as you look at it and the mountains behind.
This is deffinetly a must see if you are in Kyoto. Although you can't go inside the temple walking around it and admiring the gardens is just as nice.
This is really one of the best cultural icons in Kyoto and is really magnificent.

    Arashiyama: Hozu River Trip
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is one of the must sees when visiting Kyoto. You go on a Japanese raft which is propelled by oars in the calm water. Then when you reach the rapids (not that big rapids) you begin to speed along on each rapid. While it does go down rapids most of the journey is calm and slow. This is a really scenic area with gorges on both sides which are high. When we were here we even saw a wild deer!
Looking at the mountains is just breathtaking and the sound of the water creates a really natural effect.
This is a really picturesque ride and is absolutely worth it. Apon the end of this boat trip a motor boat pulled up beside us selling all kinds of things from food to souvenirs. The boat trip takes about 2 hours.

    Arashiyama: Sagano Sight-seeing Tram
  • Tip Rating:
  • This train travels along a track carved into the mountain just above the Hozu River. Here you can view the tall mountains Jam packed with tree's.
It is really beautiful. We went on the train late afternoon. I would reccomend travelling late morning or midday when the sun fills the gorge. I went on the boat at this time and it was so much more picturesque when the sun was there. But it still was nice in the afternoon as you could see the sunlight on the tops of the mountains. As I said earlier this train travels along the Hozu river and the scenery is the same but it is a much shorter journey so if you don't have much time this would be the way to see the Hozu river and anyway it's a different view from up above.

Things To Do: Toei Movie Land
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a small themepark with lots of little Japanese rooms. (which are used as a film set). When they are not being used for filming visitors can explore through them. When we were there there was only one advertisement being shot and the rest of the place was free to explore.
They were filming a mobile phone commercials with lots of extra's all in japanese costume.
There is a ghost house here and shops as well.
If you like Japanese architecture you will probably like this.

This is me with one of the actors out of the commercial. If you ask them nicely they might let you have a photo with them.
