The Netherlands is a nice and small country, often wrongly referred to as Holland. But I don't blame people if they do, because it is so much easier to say. "The Netherlands" is quiet a mouthful. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my page...I'm continuously working on it, so visit again!

The Netherlands is unique in many respects. For instance, its geological situation: more than half of this country lies below the sea level! The technique of reclaiming land was invented here. Many centuries ago, the dutch started to convert lakes and parts of the sea into fertile land by using windmills.

This nation started as a republic; after 80 years of war against the Spanish monarch, the 7 independent Netherlands combined their forces in a federal state, that soon became the most powerful in the then known world.

This glorious past is reflected in the many, many monuments that our cities still keep. The revolt was led by William of Orange, predecessor of the present royal family.
