Local Customs: SHOPPING TIPSShopping in...
  • Tip Rating:
  • SHOPPING TIPSShopping in Sweden is rarely cheap, but it is always good value. For a bargain, the words to look out for are 'rea', which means sale, and 'extrapris', which does not mean extra, but special low price.

SHOPS on the whole open 9.30am - 6pm on weekdays and until between 1 and 4pm on Saturdays. A lot of shops are open on Sundays as well, usually from noon till 4pm. Shops generally close early the day before a public holiday.
DEPARTMENT STORES may remain open until 8pm or 9pm and possibly also on Sundays.
    POSTOFFICES generally open 9.30am - 6pm on weekdays and 9.30am - 1pm on Saturdays.
BANKS Monday - Friday 9.30am - 6pm, but closed on Saturdays. The bank at Stockholm Arlanda Airport's arrival hall is open daily 8am - 10.30pm and at the departure hall MOnday - Friday 6.30am - 9pm, Saturday-Sunday 6.30am - 8pm.

  • Tip Rating:
  • CHURCH SERVICEThe Swedish State Church is in the Lutheran tradition and has churches throughout the country. Stochkholm has the widest range of places of worship, including a Greek Orthodox church, several synagogues and three Islamic mosques. Protestant servies in English are usually held once a week in major cities. Inquire at your hotel for more information.

  • Tip Rating:
  • TIPPING
In hotels and restaurants a service charge is included in the bill and a further tip is not expected, although it’s usual to round up the bill to the nearest 10 or 20 Skr.
Taxi drivers usually get an extra 5 Skr but this is optional.
Cloakrooms at restaurants and clubs charge about 10 Skr.
Tipping for special services provided by hotel staff is fine but not expected.

  • Tip Rating:
  • EVERYMAN'S RIGHT
An age-old Swedish law, Allemansratten ('Everyman's Right') states that you can venture into the countryside anywhere you like and pick berries and flowers, fish, camp, swim in the lakes as long as you won't harm crops or animals.

  • Tip Rating:
  • MEAL TIMES
The Swedes generally eat fairly early. Restaurants start serving lunch at about 11am and some small hotels, particularly in country areas, serve the evening meal at around 6pm. Similarly, restaurants in country areas often stop serving quite early, but at motels and in the cities you can eat much later.
