What the h*ll did that thermometer say?!?

by PartyRambo - last update: Oct 23, 2003

Home of the world's largest thermometer

109 and counting
I won't lie to you - I was just getting off the highway to find a drink, and found this thing I later learned was the world's largest thermometer, reading (you can't see it in this photo) 109 degrees (that's Fahrenheit - it's 43 Celsius for us Canadians).

Zzyzx Springs, outside of Baker

Zzyzx Springs, now commonly known as just Zzyzx, is a sleepy little town at the end of Zzyzx Road (sign pictured).
In 1944, Mr. Howard Springer settled on a plot of 12,800 acres he didn't own, built a town & bilked people out of lots of money.

The only wildlife out here...

Our friend, the cactus.
His arms reach out for a hug, but his spikes say 'no tonight, I have a headache'.
What a conflicting message!

More cactus biology can be found at http://www.dal.ca/~dp/cactus/biology.html

...oh, and forgive the poor sod in the photo - a 5-second timer on the camera just isn't enough to get a good shot of myself... :>

In A Nutshell:"Damn - that's hot - and the reading can go higher!"
