Rostov the Great really is a very small provincial town, about 200 km to the North from Moscow, about 60 km to the South from Yaroslavl'. Rostov has a status of 'a town-museum' (the same as famous Suzdal), but it isn't too touristic - tourists usually come here for a day's excursion (two or three hours around the town, a lunch, and back home). We stayed here for 3 days - and we enjoyed. |
Lots of 'Lions' everywhere (vanes, wall-paintings, names of places) remind about Russian princes' capital - Rostov was it since it's mentioning and until the XY cent. Those lions often go with the Deer - the heraldic simbol of Rostov. |
Rostov's fame in the distant past was so great that it's known as Rostov the Great by nowadays. It's written history begins since 862 and it was the Great by that time. At the moment many of Rostov's sites are under reconstruction. Rostov's Kremlin - one of the most beautiful in Russia - was included on Russia's Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage. |
