The Centre of the Universe? Until the time that I discovered Virtual Tourist, I never had any dreams or intentions to travel to Portland, or for that matter, any other place in the United States. I just hadn't thought much about it. However, after joining VT, and making so many friends, one in particular, I was 'summoned' to Portland! I should have visited in 2002, but due to circumstances beyond my control, as they say, I couldn't make it until this June.
My very fine VT friend, Phil, invited me to join him in Portland, his home city, but to get there direct from the UK was not at all easy, and I eventually decided on a flight to Los Angeles, and then thought I would take the train along the coast, up to Portland. Anyway, after much deliberation, Phil decided he would drive the 900 plus miles down to LA, and meet up with me. We would then meet some of the VT Staff (See my LA Page - coming soon), and then we would travel back to Oregon along the coast on Highway 101. So that's how I happened to be in Portland. But there were many places in between, which I still have to write about. One thing is for sure, I will not forget Portland, Phil and Deni - well, not for a very long time anyway, LOL!!

And now for a little bit of history about Portland City |
| | The city of Portland has an estimated population (in 2000) of 529,121. It is situated on the Willamette River near its junction with the Columbia River, and was incorporated in 1851. It is a port of entry, a leading financial and industrial centre, and an important deepwater port. Manufactures include lumber, wood products, paper, metals, machinery, foodstuffs, woolen textiles, clothing, and furniture. The city was founded in 1845. Its growth was rapid after 1850, when it served as a supply point for the Californian gold fields, and continued with the coming of the railroad (1883) and the Alaska gold rush (1897-1900). Portland has an art museum, a museum of science and industry, a planetarium, a forestry centre, a zoo, Japanese and Chinese Gardens, and the International Test Rose Garden. |
