You need a Head for Heights!

I have already mentioned that the drive up Mount Washington may not be to everyone's liking. You have to drive up - and down - in first gear, and there are warnings about overheating engines, and brakes! You have to give way to descending vehicles, and some of the curves are very severe! Looking down from the road may cause some people to suffer from vertigo!!!

Mary didn't like the trip at all, but we drove up as far as we were allowed. Unfortunately for me - but fortunately for Mary - snow and ice, in early October, had closed the top four miles to private vehicles. The only vehicles allowed were the Auto Road's own mini buses. One of the Rangers at the half-way point, where we had to end our journey, told me that there had only been two fatalities in all the years the road had been in operation. I'm not sure I believed him though!!
