The Grand Hotel, on the Hoe, is probably one of Plymouth's oldest and original Victorian hotels. The picture here is an advertisement from 1899, but I have it from the very helpful present-day manager that its external appearance is much as it was back then. Fortunately it was not badly damaged in the war, although the same cannot be said of its neighbour! The Grand Hotel is rated as a 3 star hotel, mainly because it does not have all of the modern day leisure ameneties. Rooms are from about £90 per night, but think of that view! £90 to £120 UKP per night

Grand Hotel: Sorry, Closed for the time being

Since writing the above information, a serious fire has taken place at the Grand, forcing its closure for up to 2 years. The whole of the roof and upper floor have been destroyed. Strange, that this hotes escaped the ravages of the War, but a modern 'electrical fault' caused so much damage.
(Update Dec 2008) It appears that the developers have decided to rebuild the Grand Hotel as luxury apartments, so, I regret, you will never be able to stay here.

Hi - been to the Eden Project (2003) but it was March so the dome with the grapes was pretty sparse, but the place itself was great. Just looked at your Plymouth pics - good place but I shan't be returning (you'll know why if you read my home page) hehehe |
