    • There are 2 Natural Heritage & 9 Cultural Heritage sites in Japan designated by UNESCO. Through this organization, sites named are preserved & protected cultural treasures & natural areas.
    In Japan, the year that they are named and the sites (& prefectures where they are located) are:
    Natural Heritage:
    1993 Shirakami-Sanchi (Aomori & Akita)
    1993 Yakushima (Kagoshima)
    Cultural Heritage:
    1993 Buddhist Monuments in the Horyu-ji Area (Nara)
    1993 Himeji Castle (Hyogo)
    1994 Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities)
    1995 Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go & Gokayama (Gifu & Toyama)
    1996 Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) (Hiroshima)
    1996 Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Hiroshima)
    1998 Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara (Nara)
    1999 Shrines and Temples of Nikko (Nikko)
    2000 Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu (Okinawa)
