Old and new

Favorite thing: I love in Graz how harmoniously the new and the old blend with each other: in this case the Minorite church, the visual art and the sculpture of the Concrete Art project.

The location of Graz

Favorite thing: Graz is a perfectly located city: partly surrounded by the Alpes, at the ford of the river Mur, with the little Schlossberg in the centre, 70 km from the Hungarian and 40 km from the Slovenian borders.

Favorite thing: In the old town, and particularly around the Hauptplatz, there are beautifully decorated buildings.

The house in the middle (at the corner of the Hauptplatz and the Sporgasse) is called Luegg. It comes from the phrase "ums Eck lugen", meaning to peek around the corner. It's has been a busy spot since the 13th century.

Rooftops

Favorite thing: These red roofs are typical of Graz and look very picturesque from the Schlossberg.

River Mur

Favorite thing: The river Mur divides the city of Graz and it's an orientation point for visitors. It's a shallow river and brings a natural atmosphere to the centre.

Architecture

Favorite thing: Sometimes it's worth to look up in a city, there are nice little details on the rooftops or higher on the walls.

Cultural Capital 2003 - Concrete Art

Favorite thing: Concrete Art is a Cultural Capital project, a series of monumental sculptures made of concrete. This is my favourite object, it looks like an abstract Christmas tree for me (the glass globes contain all kinds of horses). It stands in front of the Minorite church (Mariahilferstrasse) (probably only until the end of 2003).

Facades

Favorite thing: During the centuries, various architectural styles have blended in Graz and the result is beautiful, like this facade.

Cultural Capital 2003 - Constructions

Favorite thing: As Graz is this year's Cultural Capital, there is a lot of new development in the city, one more exciting than the other. I describe all my favourites - the Kunsthaus, the Island on the Mur, the Clock Tower Shadow and the Mary Lift - among the "Must see" places, but I must add that I admire the city of Graz for all these constructions and I wish we had at least one thing similarly breathtaking and/or funny in Budapest.
