Zhangye

Surprise !
Pronounced Jzhaang-Yeah. Please try not to pronounce Zheng-gyue or Zheng-year. The correct one is Jzhaang-Yeah. This is a city neglected by tourism probably due to its remote location. Marco Polo has lots of good travelogs on this location, I knew it when I saw a roadsign below. Anyway, in photo is an entrance wall of the ancient Big-Buddha's Temples right in the middle of the city. Its an intensity calligraphy character of Zhong, meaning faithful or loyal, a common word very much politically used during ancient imperialistic days to brainwash you.
Marco Polo Street
Marco has been to Zhangye, many years ago before us. Marco from what I read is a somewhat tourist in his time, to pass through this city by legs walking from the Mediterranean up to here and further east to setup a VT-Meeting with the Emperor of Xanadu. Zhangye has a street that bear his name, as what the photo shows. The street when the time I visit (June 2004) is a typical pseudo-classical tourist street where all constructions trying to look as Marco as possible. Apparently a statue of Marco right in the middle of the entire setup.
Strong women
China is well known for strong women, so here we have two strong policewomen. They are not just police, they also provide sweet smiles to tourists when I take this photo of them, very beautiful smiles, I regret I didn't snap more. Okay enough, now let's concentrate on searching for more beautiful of Zhangye. I like the Big Buddha Temple most especially to look at the skillful architecture but I was very surprised why this construction never been demolished or dismantled during the cultural revolution, probably too remote for them.

Gradually, it seems that the Chinese begin to perceive their identity differently, and a transformation occurs... It's fascinating to observe the changes and improvements...
