Off The Beaten Path: Jelutongese Kites

  • Jelutongese Kites is absolutely unheard-of. The location is completely out of tourist area in the inner section of Jelutong. The location is called West Jelutong off Jalan Makloom. It is also near Perak lane if you know how to squeeze through from the rural road. We discovered this location by fluke when I drove into a rural road full of wooden contructions. The road was so narrow until my car has to reverse when I come out.

In this location, we discovered a guy named Simon King who produces colorful homemade kites. Each cost RM2 and RM3 for bigger Kites. I bought 2 from him, he said many Lumpurese ask him for more Kites. What an OTBP.

Off The Beaten Path: Old hair saloon
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This is probably the oldest hair saloon in Penang Island still survive. This shop is open air without glasses or air-con. Has a fan and four adjustable seats to compete with the moderns. Few flourescent lights and has an Angkong installed in the middle. The barber is an old man and all the materials are as old as the owner I think. If you are in the area of Kimberly street, try to have a hair cut at this shop and snap as many photos as possible. What a place to visit.

Off The Beaten Path: Jewish cemetary
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • You probably never heard of this yet, yes Penang has a place called The Jewish Cemetery, located at Jalan Zainal Abidin formerly known as Yahudi Road. I took this photo October 2004, still fresh and new. Tourists can visit this place for sure, no political connections but only travels. I don't know anything about the Jews, do not ask me anything. The gate of this cemetery is closed when I was there, please click the picture to enlarge. What I did was to stand there to observe and I saw an Indian family resides in there probably as the cemetery guard. The background of this photo is Komtar the tallest building in Penang.

    Off The Beaten Path: Jelutong
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Jelutong road is one of the oldest road of Penang. The road is quite interesting for tourists to look at how the Islanders live the traditional way. To explore all of Jelutong is possible but need at least a week or more, too many hidden roads alleys etc.

  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • " The earliest grave dates to 1835 -- an English woman of Jewish faith. Jews first arrived in Malaysia as early as the 11th century. Malaysia and Singapore received a wave of Jewish immigration during China's Communitist Revolution. "
