Beruas is a name derived from a tree, a mangoesteen-like tree that bear fruits, known as Pokok Bruas in local Malay, Seashore mangosteen or scientific name Garcinia hombroniana. Pictures of Bruas tree can be found at various websites. According to reliable sources, at long time ago before the state became known as today’s Perak, it was a kingdom in Sanskrit called Gangga Negara, the meaning in Sanskrit is ‘A City on the Ganges’, unfortunately we don't have a complete history of ancient Beruas, Beruas today is a quiet easygoing town or Kampong with cars or trucks passed by and occassionally tourists like me came and snap some photos. Gangga Negara is mentioned by Malay Annals (Sejarah Melayu) and the kngdom covered present day Beruas, Dinding and Manjung in the state of Perak, Malaysia, Raja Gangga Shah Johan was among the kings. The kingdom collapsed after an attack by King Rajendra Chola I of around year 1025. The kingdom was believed founded by Raja Ganjil Sarjuna of Kedah or the Khmer royalties around the 2nd century. Artifacts dated back to the 5th and the 6th century have been found at Beruas.
