Vienna Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Naschmarket/Flohmarkt
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you have spare time, you should visit the largest open market in Vienna, the Naschmarkt (translated, it means the nibble-market). Located near Karlsplatz (beside Kettenbruekegasse Station), you should not miss this chance to experience the Viennese market where all cultures meet. Here, you'll not only find a flea market section, but also a large exotic food, clothing, and fruit/vegetable section. It's totally packed on Saturdays (there is also a flea market section), but that's the best time to see all the vendors in action.

    Off The Beaten Path: UNO-City
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Vienna International Centre (aka UNO-City): I worked here everyday, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the guided tour around the large United Nations compound. From Building Blocks A through J, you'll be boggled by the strange architecture, but you'll be amazed at how well people of different cultures work together for a greater, peaceful purpose. Take the U1 to the VIC and walk downstairs towards Security Checkpoint 1. Organized tours take place daily (weekdays) at 11:00hrs and 14:00hrs. People often miss the United Nations because all these terrible steel and glass developments have been mushrooming around it in the past year. Don't miss it - it's also probably the only place in Vienna where you'll see peoples from all over the world working together for a peaceful, safe, and secure world at the following international organizations: UNOV, UNHCR, UNIDO, UNICEF, IAEA, and CTBTO.

parks & gardens: The Creepy Zentralfriedhof
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some people are spooked-out about visiting cemetaries, but in Vienna, the people seem to be obsessed with Death. Everywhere, you will see monuments to great writers and composers who have died, and there are cemetaries in several districts of this city. If you want to see an amazing cemetary, I suggest you visit the Zentralfriedhof. Here you will see kilometers upon kilometers of magnificent gravestones and monuments. It is dark, overgrown, and some graves here date back almost a millennium! People who visit their deceased friends and relatives often require a map to navigate this cemetary. If you look around, you may bump into the graves of the classical greats: Beethoven, Brahms, and Strauss. Mozart, however, does not rest here - he lays in an unmarked grave in another cemetary.

parks & gardens: The Vienna Woods
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you plan on staying in Vienna for a longer time (during the autumn or springtime, especially), you should take a hike through the Vienna Woods. Take a bus up from Heiligenstadt (38A) and walk around at Kahlenberg. Great views of the city from the mountain and you can pass Grinzing on the way back down - treat yourself to well-deserved Sauerkraut and Bier.

hi eleanor, great vienna-page! but i have to tell you one thing: don giovanni was first shown in prague in the estates theater in the 18th century, when the vienna state opera-building did not exist yet... greetings from vienna!
