Located in the Eastern part of China, Nanjing is known as the "Capital of Ten Dynasties". Its history as China's ancient capital stretches from 220 A.D. to 1949, and it is also a famous centre for astronomy and other sciences. Visitors can find many interesting attractions in this city of five million people, including the Yangtze River Bridge, which took seven thousand workers more than ten years to build, and provided the first overland link between Beijing and the Yangtze Valley. Nanjing museum displays historical artifacts covering more than five thousand years of history, including the world's first seismograph, prehistoric pottery and bronzes. Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum, which is built on the slopes of Zijin Mountain, honours Dr Sun Yat Sen, the first democratic leader of China. Xuanwu Lake, Hong Wu's tomb, Linggu Temple Park, Zijin Mountain Observatory and Mochou Park are also popular tourist spots.

As one of the cultural centres of China, Nanjing provides visitors with a wide array of regional delicacies from every corner of the country, including lake crab, pressed duck, and fresh tea from the nearby hills. The city also offers a wealth of international and Chinese manufactured goods, while its dexterous local craftsmen are adept at reproducing old relics and antiques.
