Lisbon (Lisboa) is the political, economic and cultural capital of Portugal, located on the north shore of the Tagus River (Tejo, in Portuguese), just a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean. A city of winding, medieval streets, Baroque palaces and criss-crossing tramlines, Lisbon's heyday was the Golden Age of Discovery (15th & 16th centuries) when her sailors were masters of newly discovered sea routes to Asia and the New World.

Lisbon is rewarding to explore on foot, particularly from the Praça do Comércio through the grid-like structure of the Baixa to Parque Eduardo VII. Or take the Ascensor da Glória from Restauradores to the Bairro Alto for fabulous views over the city. Tram 15 goes to Belém and tram 28 to the Alfama.

Other options include exploring Parque das Nações or going further afield to the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Sintra. The Lisbon Card offers free transport and many reductions on attraction admissions.
