"Coloane" Ilha de Coloane by xiquinho

Ilha de Coloane Travel Guide: 32 reviews and 47 photos

The islands of Taipa and Coloane are Macau's traditional countryside, where beaches, ancestral Chinese villages, and forested hills with nature trails and picnic areas can be found. Once considered remote from the city, when they were accessible only by small ferries, the islands have developed as integrated suburbs since being linked to the mainland by two bridges and a causeway. There are frequent buses to Taipa and Coloane from Macau's downtown and ferry terminal areas.

Coloane remains mostly rural although it is now the home for the modern container port, a golf and country club, go-kart track and planned industrial park. It has as a picturesque village and plenty of good restaurants.

Coloane (7.6 sq.km) is linked by a 2.11 km causeway to Taipa (6.3 sq.km), which is connected to the city by two bridges of 2.6 km and 4.4 km respectively.

When Macau was the center of trade between China and the West, the island of Coloane, with its deserted coves, rugged cliffs, large sea caves, and densely forested hills, proved a convenient base for pirates who preyed on the rich cargoes. Today its sandy beaches, hiking trails, and other outdoor attractions make it a pleasurable retreat.
