Vibrant Bangkok is famous for its colourful Thai culture, good food, excellent shopping and a pulsating nightlife. As a capital city, Bangkok is the political and business centre of Thailand. Running through this city is the Chao Phraya River, its banks lined with five-star hotels, Buddhist temples and markets. Narrow canals branch out from the river and snake through the metropolis. It is no wonder European explorers referred to Bangkok as "the Venice of the East". |
| | The north-south railway line divides Bangkok. On the west side, Old Bangkok contains many of the ancient historical temples and palaces. The main business and residential districts are situated on the east side, in New Bangkok. |
Visitors should be aware of the wicked traffic jams of this rapidly developing city. With the sheer variety of sights, sounds, smells and tastes, Bangkok is not a place for the faint of heart. | | |
