Phnom Penh is the cultural, religious and administrative centre of Cambodia. After its recent tragic history of warfare and repression, Phnom Penh is gradually re-awaking. There are many interesting spots to visit. Angkor, the former Lost City of the Khmer Empire, is Cambodia's most famous and splendid historic treasure. Standing on the site of the former citadel, the Royal Palace is a magnificent and extensive riverside complex. The floor of the majestic Silver Pagoda is paved with five thousands of tiles of pure silver and it contains the most valuable and impressive display of riches in Cambodia. Other must-see attractions are the Throne Hall, the National Museum, Choeung Ek, Wat Phnom and Wat Ounalom.
Cambodian food is similar to Vietnamese. Vegetables, pork, beef, chicken and seafood are primary ingredients.
Hand-made jewelry, batiks, silk sarongs, kramas and antiques are Phnom Penh's best buys. As an agricultural country, Cambodia's main products are rice, timber and soy.
