Getting TO/AROUND: After three trips to Spain, I can freely say that I am ready to write a thesis on the transportation system in the country.
    :-)))
Reaching Madrid: plane or train! The summer of 2002, I actually travelled by train, from Skopje to Malaga (not the smartest thing to do in case you aren't exactly prepared for 4 days of train hopping).
Spain gave me the most trouble, given the fact most frequent trains are TALGO, VERY nice, expensive and not interrail-friendly. Once you realize you HAVE TO HAVE reservations, things are not so bad.
There are two major train stations: Atocha and Chamartin! Metro links are perfect so need not worry about reaching the center. (Puerta del Sol or Gran Via)...
    ...
Now since finding a nice-price flight is something that needs no particular explanation (just good luck and an on-time search, hoping ur traveling agency will make an effort), I won't dwell on that issue.
    ...
BUS... I explored the bus possibilities during my second trip in Spain, and managed to cross about... 2000 kilometers, maybe even more, by bus.
I actually find it quite nice, since they were not crowded, some of the distances have a nicer price than a train (for example Madrid-Barcelona-Madrid).
So that is also an option.

Getting TO/AROUND: ok, we bought one of those ten-rides tickes that is valid for the Metro and the Bus, to have it just in case. Though we walked most of the time - BuT IT IS WORTH IT. In case your feet hurt too much, moving around the city by metro or bus is just fine.

Barajas airport: getting to the center from the Airport

    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: Ok, so as soon as you step in the hall of the entrance of Barajas, buy a METROBUS, a ticket for 10 metro rides and the buses. Go to the Metro, which is a bit… well not far, but you need to do some walking.
Take the metro to the station NUEVOS MINISTERIOS, and over there you change it to line 10, that can take you to Alonso Martínez, which is pretty much centrally located. Although the stations GRAN VÍA, Puerta del Sol, Callao… are the ones in the very centre. Normally it is lines 1 and 5.

The Metro, I think, is pretty easy to use and... quite practical.

In case you need to travel WAY TOO EARLY in the morning, like I did, well.. there is always the option taqxi/cab. The hostel "Las Murallas" scheduled one for me, for 5:15 am, and it didn't cost too much... 20 euros. Or more precisely 16 with additional 4 because it was a night tarif.

Great tips on Madrid. Every bit of information from somoen who knows the city is helpful. Yours appeal to a traveller who doesn't want a "bus tour" of 3 minutes at each site. thanks
