Head to the top of the Campanile in Piazza San Marco for a thrilling view of the city and lagoon. There's a lift and they charge a small fee.

During the day, wander through the more remote areas of the city - you'll be startled by all of the unique architecture and local culture. When the sun starts to set, come to Piazza San Marco. The tourists will have started to drift out and you'll have an amazing view across the lagoon.

A carving outside of the Palazzo Ducale. Courtiers would put written accusations of treason against each other into this mouth, and the ducal authorities would investigate and prosecute the accused. Interesting concept of justice, eh?

Visit the Peggy Guggenheim, a fabulous museum of modern art. The collection is truly stunning; you'll be floored by the works by Magritte, Leger, Ernst, Picasso, and Pollack, and you'll probably also discover some new favorites. The museum houses the collection of eccentric millionairess Peggy Guggenheim. In the gift shop, you can purchase pairs of the flamboyant and gaudy sunglasses that Peggy so adored. Her cats are also buried in the courtyard outside of the museum, along with several sculptures.

Directions: Coming from Piazza San Marco, it's left of the Ponte della Accademia, on the opposite side of the grand canal. There will be signs.

La Basilica di San Marco in Piazza San Marco. The golden mosaic ceiling is quite impressive. Watch out for occasional flooding which closes the entrance to the basilica. Arrive EARLY and beat the hordes, or risk waiting in line for a long time. I recommend paying the extra fee to walk up to the roof of the basilica and wander about, enjoying a view directly overlooking the square.
