Getting TO/AROUND: Many places in Norway are only accessible by car. Travelling by train or boat will also bring you to many wonderful places.

Many find the Hurtigruten a fine way to discover Norway. There leaves a new one every evening from Bergen to the North Cape. The cruise can be taken the whole way, or just part of the way.

See my Oslo page for tips on the rout by car from Oslo to Bergen.

A popular tour for people with little time is 'Norway in a nutshell' A combination of the train between Oslo and Bergen - and a fjord cruise. Read more here:

Getting TO/AROUND: The shortest rout west is highway 7 over the mountain plateau Hardangervidda. It used to be the main rout between East and West, but now there is a highway further north that can boast of one of the worlds longest road tunnels. I still prefer the Hardangervidda rout because of the fantastic nature that I never get tired of.

Keep in mind that the weather can be rough up there at times and can change in seconds. In the winter it is close at night and if the weather is rough they use “convoy driving” with a snow plough in the lead. If it gets real bad they simply close the road.

The drive from Oslo to the Hardangervidda is easy.

Getting TO/AROUND: Once you pass over the Hardangervidda you come down the Mobe valley. Used to be a scary drive with a narrow winding road and hardly a place to meet another vehicle. Now most of the road is in tunnels and no problem at all. You can still walk down the old road, as it is kept in order for tourists to see. There is also a small tourist train on wheels that travels up and down the old road in the summer time. Worth a try!

Getting TO/AROUND: Once you come down to the Hardanger Fjord, you will have to use a ferry to cross over. The first ferry you come to (Brimmnes - Bruravik), is the fastest way to get to Bergen. On the other side you drive on to Voss and Bergen. If you want a more scenic drive, continue to the other ferry crossing at Kinsarvik. On the other side you drive along the Hardanger and on to Bergen. I recommend this if you have the time.

Speedlimits (with a few exeptions) are 80/50 km/hour. There are very few freeways, so expect your average driving-time to be slower than in sentral Europe. The fines for speeding are high! (almost 300 Euro / US$)

Getting TO/AROUND: An alternative way to see Norway is by boat. The opportunities are great for all types of sailing. You can sail in protected waters in the huge Oslo fjord, or on the inside of the Islands of Western Norway. Most places the water is deep enough to sail all the way to shore and tie up to the nearest tree! There are also marinas with all facilities for those that prefer that.

See my Bergen page for Charter companies.

Getting TO/AROUND: Norway is a loooong country with many means of travel. For the first-timer it can be difficult to work out how to get around. Should you choose airplane, boat, train, bus or car?
