  • Europe’s largest mountain plateau, Hardanger Vidda, is about 2-3 hours drive from Bergen. You can also get there by train. In the winter it is ideal for cross country skiing. In the summer you can hike for days, and put up the tent anywhere. Or you can hike from cabin to cabin owned by the Norwegian Mountain Touring Association.

A popular activity is renting bikes and bicycling along the railroad. The old road that was built at the turn of the last century has been repaired for the use of mountain bicycle tourism. Read more about Rallarvegen:

  • The great thing about sailing here on the west coast of Norway is that you happen by these special places. On the picture I am passing the little island of Lerøy in the fjord south of Bergen. You see the small ferry at the small idyllic ferry stop.

The ferry to this island goes from the larger island of Sotra about 45 minutes drive from Bergen

  • King Håkon the 7th unveiled the memorial stone in 1921. The stone is a monument in remembrance to a great King with the same name, king Håkon the Good.
He was born here and died here too. He came sailing past here after one of his many fierce battles, and went ashore. His wounds were so great that he died.

The spot is a bit “off the beaten path” just outside Bergen. You can drive there in about 15-20 minutes, and there is a city bus that stops by there a few times a day.

    See my Håkonshella page here

Thanks for the wishes. I am enjoying an irish whiskey, Redbreast. I know I am a traitor to single malt but this is good, dang good!
