  • The absolutely most popular tour in Norway is the "Norway in a nutshell" tour. It can be done in one day, and many describe it as a Norway in miniature. The tour goes by rail, bus and boat, and takes you through most of the types of nature Norway has to offer.
Basically the tour is a side tour in a loop off the railway between Oslo and Bergen at a distance of about an hour from Bergen. The loop can be done either clockwise or counter clockwise. It includes a trip on the famous rail "Flåmsbanen", a trip by boat on the Sognefjord and a bus ride from the fjord up to Voss.

If the trip is done from Bergen, count on a minimum of 7 hours without stopovers. From Oslo about 15 hours.

Price from Bergen about 700,- kr. / 100,- Euro

I have never done the complete tour in one go, but I have tried all the areas and it truly is amazing.

  • Take the cable car up the highest mountain (Ulrikken), or take the funicular (steep train ride) up the second highest mountain (Fløyen) with a fantastic view. It’s a nice walk down partly through the woods and old parts of Bergen.

  • Håkonshallen was built by King Håkon Håkonsson about year 1250. This was the one and only time Norway as a kingdom was ruled from Bergen.

    Museums / Memorials: Vikings??

  • Many visitors come to Norway expecting to see a lot about Vikings everywhere. They then are surprised that Norwegians have not made a tourist industry out of this. You will of course find a few Viking souvenirs at the souvenir shop. But the Viking age is just one part of the Norwegian culture. The Vikings were those that travelled to other countries to conquere and explore. Those that didn't go were simply not called Vikings. The word Viking is also a verb and loosely means conqueror.

If you are interested in the historical part of the Vikings, you will find a Viking exhibition at The Cultural History Collections (museum)

For more info on Vikings, use the link below.

  • One of Bergen’s great sons is Ludvig Holberg.
You can see the statue of him right behind the fish market.

He was a famous writer and the Danes try to steal him for theirs hahaha. It is said it was him that started Danish literature. Today he is most remembered for his theatre plays. But no matter what the Danes say, he was born and grew up in Bergen.

  • Like any town with respect for itself, there is a park in the centre. The park has a small lake with a fountain. There is a music pavilion, lots of flowers and nice plants (in the summer). Oh yes, there are lots of pidgins.

  • Walking about Bergen you will notice a lot of interesting buildings. The red one in the picture is the fire station. It is old and will soon be a museum as soon as they get around to building a new one.

This is for all of Norway:

  • A dark side of Bergen's history is the burning of witches. This stone is in memory of the public murders of 350 victims in the years from 1500-1750.

If I am not mistaken, this is the only instance in the world were a government has made an official apology for the witch-hunt.

  • It is a small castle, but it's the only one we have :-)
The name is "Gamlehaugen" and is the Norwegian Kings residence when he is in Bergen.

It was built in 1901 in the style of a Scottish castle.

It is open to visitors when the king is not there.

The gardens are free for all to use, and there are no restrictions. One of the good things living in a peaceful country :-)

Directions: Fjøsanger, about 5-6 km south of Bergen.
It is also near "Trollhaugen" the home of Edvard Grieg, and most combine the visit to both places.

  • This wooden church was originally built in the year 1150. It was ruined by fire some years ago and has been totally rebuilt in its original form.

I can recommend a trip to see this church if you are in Bergen as there are not many buildings left that show this type of original Norwegian architecture.
