Luggage And Bags: I would have to say a backpack. Unless you are rich enough to take a taxi everywhere who picks you up and drops you off exactly where you need to be. The airport type of suitcases simply don't work outside an airport. The sidewalks are often irregular and your suitcase will tip over. All the time.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: spring and summer: A sweater, long sleaved shirts, jeans or other long, warm pants a t-shirt, shorts, good walking shoes that are waterproof. (Waterproof)Jacket. Umbrella.
fall and winter: A sweater, long sleaved shirts, jeans or other long, warm pants a t-shirt, a heavy sweater. Make sure you can dress in layers. Heavy waterproof jacket. Umbrella
Weather is very unpredictable for example march, april and october can have T-shirt and even shorts weather, but they can also have snow! Summers aren't necesarally hot, or cold, it can be anywhere from 13 degrees to 30 degrees celcius. Do check the weather before you leave the hotel (hostels usually put it on a blackboard). Also, if you want contact with a Dutch person: talk about the weather. We love it!
