PERU 1999 >>

On hindsight, I do not know how I found the courage to travel literally halfway across the globe to Peru by myself with hardly any knowledge of Spanish.

I supposed I was just really curious about the Nazca Desert lines, Machu Picchu and Cuzco which I've read up bits and pieces about since I was young. The culture there is also very rich. Plus, I love camping and wild-life viewing so I thought it would be interesting to see Peru which had everything.

This trip was NOT without its problems. I was robbed, pick-pocketed (attempted), could have had my bag stolen from under my seat, had things stolen from my room, electrocuted, nearly toppled down the steep mountain trail, almost caught fire a couple of times, donated copious amount of blood to the Society of Biting Insects and even reared some ticks for a couple of days. But I think I really learnt a lot as a traveller from this trip.

I hope you enjoy my Travelogue as it was quite an eye-opening experience for me...

Stone ruins, trapping enigmas and legends
Messages encoded in beads and threads
Dried-up mummies in frozen screams
Intricate textiles, now in shreds

Multiple cultures from epochs ago
Rose from the coast, highlands, jungles and deserts
Slowly taken over by the mighty Incas
Only to be silenced forever by the bearded Spaniards

Mysterious drawings criss-crossed the plains
Boats of reed sail the highest lake
Silent sarcophagi perched on cliffs
A network of trails, through the mountains they snake

From CHILE [3] 2003...

The northern part of Peru proved to be surprisingly wonderful for me as I spent two weeks devouring pre-Incan cultures in numerous museums and ruins...

PERU 2005 >>
... +| Part of SA 2005 |+ ...

When I first went to Peru in 1999, I thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime trip and never thought I would return. Then, I visited all the places I had read about Peru since I was 15 - Machu Picchu, Cuzco, Nazca Lines, jungle trip, etc... Well, Peru started my immense love and interest for South America and subsequently, I returned to Peru 2 more times.

As part of my South America 2005 trip, I tumbled down the length of Peru and visited more places steeped in history and culture like Chiclayo and Cajamarca and marvelled at the Andean mountains around Huaraz and scenery of Colca Canyon.

Indeed, Peru is an enigma, a treasure, a cultural gem.
