Tortillas, Mexicans' staple food : I'm ashamed to say this but I may have an innate dislike for the smell of processed corn. Horrible to discover this AFTER I arrived in Mexico.
Most meals, I ended up gulping down my 'jugo' (juice) with every mouthful of tortillas. Or I ate the fish or whatever on the plate and left the tortillas (served separately) alone. When my 'jugo' was finished, I would stop eating and faked a smile to the waiter, "Basta, gracias... Grande, grande." (Enough, thank you... Big, big.)
Enchiladas, gorditas, quesadillas, tlayudas, entomatadas, tamales, tostadas, chilaquiles, tacos, burritas, sincronizadas, papadzules... sounded like varieties in the Mexican cuisines, no?
I innocently queried the waiters at first, pointing to the menu : "¿Qué es esto? ¿Qué es esto? er... ¿Qué es esto?" (What is this?)
Hang on, aren't they all tortillas?
Tortilla, folded. Tortilla, rolled. Tortilla, pan-fried. Tortilla, pan-fried, greenish-black and gross-looking. Tortilla, folded and sealed at the sides. Tortilla, steamed. Tortilla, crisp and open like a pizza. Tortilla, small and round, order of 4. Tortilla, folded in triplets, covered in 'salsa rojo'. Tortilla, folded in triplets, covered in 'salsa verde'. Tortilla, folded in triplets, covered in mole. Tortilla, but stuffed with eyes, tongue, brain...
Much more in the travelogue... Feel free to take a look, por favor.
