Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru. It is located in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers, along the Pacific coast. It stretches all the way to the seaport of Callao.
Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535 as the City of the Kings, because the Spanish needed a city by the ocean for easier trade. It soon became the most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, thereby leading to the decline of Cusco and, after the Peruvian War of Independence, officially became the capital of the Republic of Peru.
I have been to Lima twice, once in 1999 and once in 2005.
