Although legally tolerated, the following activities are technically illegal... But if you believe in the old saying,'when in Rome, do as the Roman's', then I guess you'll need to stop in an Amsterdam Coffeshop. Although these establishments do sell coffee, 'Coffeeshop' does not describe the primary activity going on in these places. A 'Coffeeshop' in A'dam (and all over the Netherlands) is an establishment that sells, and allows on premises smoking of, cannabis products (marijuana and hashish).

The Leidseplein, a very popular location for the Nightlife. Boom Chicago, the Melkweg, and a lot of bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and 'coffeeshops'are located here. During the warmer months you'll find lots of street entertainers here also.

Dress Code: Depends on where you plan on going, but generally no dress code.
Directions: At the end of Leidsestraat, just before crossing the Singelgracht. Trams 1,2,5(these may have detours due to construction) and 6,7,10, and 20 (circle tram) all have stops at the Leidseplein.

Nightlife Spot: Live Music
Melkweg, Amsterdam's biggest multi-functional entertainment venue, and offers music, drama, movies, a weekend disco, a bar and restaurant, and even a 'coffee shop'! The programming includes international acts as well as local talent. the Melkweg, 'Melkweg' means Milky Way in Dutch, used to be a dairy.

Boom Chicago. Kinda' like a dinner theater. The theater portion is a semi-improvisational group comedy thing. It's in English but attracts a local and international crowd. They have a couple different 'themed' shows. check their schedule. BTW, I'm told this is the only place you can buy pitchers of beer in A'dam (from my experience this is true).

Directions: On the Leidseplein (address: Leidseplein 12). This is one of the main nightlife areas in A'dam, you're bound to find yourself here at least one night in town.
