Another stay in Ebeon. | Checking out the vinyards of southern France. |
Another holiday and this time I was staying with Steffs' family in Ebeon. Where's Ebeon? Steff's mum, Jane, explains all. Ebeon is at the centre of a triangle created by St Jean d'Angely at the north, where there is a lovely market on Weds & Sats, Cognac to the south east where Hennessy, Otard, Remy Martin etc have their great distilleries, and Saintes to the south west, a great site of roman remains, including the Arch of Germanicus, the Great Arena, and many pieces of sculpture, carved stones and pillars, all excavated there. The Charente river runs through Saintes and Cognac. St Jean is on the Boutonne - all most attractive and picturesque. The whole of the area is used to cultivate vines, maize, sunflowers, corn, rape seed, melons and everyday fruit and vegetables. Fresh fish and shell fish abound here, oysters and mussels in particular. The fish restaurants are superb, especially on the islands off the coast. Thanks to Jane for the punctuation masterclass. Because Jane and David own the house we can visit whenever we like, this means the pictures and tips on this page will have different dates. Also on the property is the wonderful barn conversion and swimming pool, see below. If you are thinking about coming here then remember it is very peaceful and secluded, but not too far from a number of great places to visit. For the seaside we chose to go to Royan, a bit of a drive and there are nearer beaches but it was a fantastic day out, as was La Rochelle. There are many historic sites and ancient towns nearby, to get a taste of the Charente Maritime we visited some of them, take a look at my pages for Taillebourg, Saintes, La Rochelle, Authon ( the quaint old village just down the road) and of course Royan. Authon and Ebeon have been twinned to cut down on the administration so if you are searching the internet look for Authon-Ebeon. Over the years we have visited a number of times so i will try to date the tips and pictures as i go. |
| | The old farm house. Typical of many houses in the area, this is where I go when I want perfect peace and quiet. It's an ideal getaway and only a 540 mile ride from London. There is little to disturb you in Ebeon and it's not an easy place to find either. The many attractions of the area now include a micro brewery in nearby Bercloise village which has it's own bar in the evenings and at weekends, and remember this, Ebeon is only 22 kilometers from Cognac and we all know what the attraction is there! For those who crave the nightlife there is also a bar in Authon, just a twenty minute cycle straight down the road. |
| | The adjoining pool. http://www.holiday-rentals.com/index.cfm/fa/find.regions/reg_refno/180 Steff`s brother saw the potential in the adjacent barn for a holiday home and decided to put some money and muscle into it, the result is this fantastic conversion. The barn is now available to rent so if you like peace and seclusion then this is the place for you. Remember the coast and many historic sites are not far away. There is also a pool, with a barbeque area and outside shower, this was taken on a shady day and doesn`t do it justice but it really is a fantastic place to be when the sun is out. |
