Off The Beaten Path: Or perhaps under the beaten...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Or perhaps under the beaten path ... How about an Underground Railroad tour? Prior to 1865 during the days of slavery, Detroit was an important stop on The Underground Railroad because the city was the last stop before slaves could reach Canada. The system was neither underground nor a real railroad, but an organized system of abolitionists and sympathizers who had 'safe houses' to help escaped slaves travel from point to point. Customized group tours are available through the Detroit Historical Museum. Reservations required. 313. 833. 1805.

  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1763, the site that is now the historic Elmwood Cemetery was the bloody battleground between Chief Pontiac who led his tribe into battle against the Brittish. The cemetery was established in 1846. Today, the tranquil land is the resting place of 28 Civil War generals, 28 mayors of Detroit, 14 members of the historic 102nd US Colored Troops unit who fought in the Civil War, 11 US senators, seven state governors, an internationally-accalimed Shakespearean actress who died in 1899 an early member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and Count Cyril Petrovich Tolstoi, grandson of Leo Tolstoy. The cemetery is also filled with beautiful sculptures and monuments. Group tours are available.

Your pictures are excellent. My Dad grew up on Edison and the house is still in the family. I've been told by my dad that there are some homes on Boston Ave with bowling alleys and swimming pools in the basement. David Luton Bedfordshire UK

Your pages on Detroit are superb. As a former resident and longtime fan of Detroit I'm so pleased to see what you've done here. Perhaps you should consider moving the BE & Corktown sections in Things to Do. Cheers, Franklin
