Although the worst problem that visitors are likely to have is a stomache situation after eating too many pastries, watch for pickpockets in the metro, major tourist attractions, street shows, etc. Pickpockets look for an easy target, so it's a good idea to wear a money belt under the clothes and keep little luggage locks on the day pack. The kid who picked my pocket in the metro last year ironically helped himself to a map of the Paris metro system ... giggle. He became part of the whole cultural experience while the goodies were safely stashed in a money belt under my skirt.

At night, the metro is typically safe, but try to avoid the stops that have long, extended hallways between platforms where unpleasant folks can easily relieve you of your goodies in relative seclusion. This includes: Chatelet les Halles, Chateau Rouge, Gare de Nord, Strasbourg-St. Denis, Reaumur-Sebastopol and Montparnasse-Bienvenue.

Parisians love their dogs. They love them a lot. They love them so much that one sure way to separate the tourists from the locals is that the locals look down when they walk. For a while, I think there was a publc service campaign with a slogan along the lines of 'If you love Paris, don't let this happen ...' I, unfortunately, can say from personal experience that the campaign didn't quite work.
