Diego Garcia is a bit of a political hot potato. The island is part of the Chagos Archipelago, which is administered by the British Indian Ocean Territory or B.I.O.T.. It is probably the most beautiful island you'll never visit unless you enlist in the U.S. or Royal Navies. Although, many yachtsmen visit the surrounding islands also know as the Oil islands. I put this page under the Mauritius title as VT doesn't have any B.I.O.T. reference pages. Diego Garcia was once a remote outpost for ships journeying across the Indian Ocean. The island was also known for its copra plantations. The remnants of the plantation can still be seen today. The indigenous people were moved off the island in the early 1970's to make room for the U.S. Navy base. They now live in very poor conditions in Mauritius and the Seychelles. |
