This crazy landmark is the most prominent feature in Marietta, as you will soon discover. People tend to give directions from it to anywhere in town, or even anywhere in the area, as in "Yeah that's about ten miles down from the big chicken, first road past the highway, down about another 20 miles on the left at the end of a winding dirt road... can't miss it." In reality it is right on one of the busiest intersections in Marietta, but not everything else given in reference to it is even close. Luckily this photo is not animated, since the chicken's eye spins around as its beak opens and shuts. Looking at it for even more than a few seconds will do your head in, which could account for quite a few things about the town, including the author's stories. |

| Pros: | "Hmm. Let me get back to you on that." | | Cons: | "Traffic, cults, no good bars" | | In A Nutshell: | "Well what can you say about a town whose most notable feature is a building that looks like a chicken." |

goingsolo Sat Apr 30, 2005 03:32 UTC Interesting and creative page. I spent a brief time in Marietta and the directions were "just past the Confederate cemetary", which was enough for me. Didn't see the chicken or any of the "Deliverance" backdrop though, fortunately. :) | XenoHumph Tue Oct 19, 2004 17:56 UTC Great page on this little corner of America! Worth the trip just for the chicken's eye!! | Seabiscuit Sat Aug 4, 2001 11:32 UTC Insider view of Marietta...Very nice! | DaKat Sat Aug 4, 2001 04:17 UTC Fun page, but I`m afraid . . very afraid! :-) |
