Belgium covers a small geographical area estimated at 30.515 km², with a population of 10.200.000 inhabitants.
Belgium is geographically divided into 3 regions : lower Belgium (coast, polders, Kempen - cities : Antwerpen, Ghent, Knokke, Oostende, Brugge, Hasselt, Mol), Central Belgium (Flanders and Walloon Brabant, Hainaut - cities : Brussels, Mons, Charleroi, Tournai), the 3rd region is called Ardennes (Namur, Liège, Luxembourg, Signal de Botrange).
We have 10 provinces : Anvers, Brabant Flamand, Brabant Wallon, Flandre Orientale, Flandre Occidentale, Hainaut, Liège, Namur, Limburg and Luxembourg.
The Belgian motto is "L'Union fait la force", it means "Union make force" !
Our national hymn is called "Brabançonne". You can find sentences of this hymn Place Surlet de Chokier in Brussels, also with a monument dedicated to this hymn.
Belgium is a Kingdom, Independant since October 4th, 1830.
The first King was Leopold I (1790-1865), then Leopold II (called Constructor King)(1835-1909), Albert I (called Chevalier King) (1875-1934) he died accidentally climbing a rock in Marche Les Dames - musuem, Leopold III (1903-1983), Baudouin I (1930-1993) and now : Albert II since 1993, born in 1934, brother of Baudouin I.
There are three officially recognized languages: French and Dutch are the main languages; German is spoken by a small segment of the population and English is widely spoken.
