Kissing bridge, West Montrose - Waterloo

The West Montrose bridge is a decorative/colourful bridge. It is painted red, with decorative interior lamps and a gabled roof. It is an attractive and a well-built structure. The community is identified by the bridge and the residents have placed a symbolic importance upon the structure, often calling it the 'Kissing Bridge.'

Since it was first built, the West Montrose bridge has been labelled as "the kissing bridge," the traditional toll being a kiss. After all, it was secluded and it was against the law to travel over any bridge faster than a walk. Local girls learned to be wary when their escort's horse stopped inside the bridge without any command from the driver.

The bridge was recognized as an historic site by the Ontario Archaeological and Historic Sties Board in 1960. In 1975, the bridge was designated as a heritage site.

Kissing bridge West Montrose

Many artists seem to come to West Montrose to capture the pastoral setting surrounding the bridge.
The red bridge stands out against the green meadows and surrounding park area in the summer. Even in November, when I visited, it was beautiful and we stayed here for quite some time.

On our way to Saint Jacob we saw this broken down barn. Had to photograph it because I am puzzled why people let this... more travel advice

I had great time in St.Jacobs! But next time, tell me not to do it, when you ask me to pull over, LOL. Mmmm, that sausage was good!!! I've asked for a new location : St.Jacobs! And it's here! hahaha, so you can move your page to the right location ;-)
