Amsterdam, for most foreigners it is almost the same as porn and coffeeshop. However, Amsterdam has more than that. The city has character, despite the fact it hasn t got buildings like Paris, Rome and London have, or an unforgettable skyline like Hong Kong and New York seem to have. The city is like a decor piece, beautiful, wealthy and well build, platform for whatever piece, from opera to theater.
The capital of The Netherlands, built on poles in the mouth of the river Amstel used to be forth biggest city after Paris, London and Napels in the 17th century and it used to rule the seven world seas. Trade in spices and slaves made Amsterdam a wealthy city. Tradesmen favoured art and had city palaces built for them, most of those houses still are there. Motto of the city seems to be 'moet kunnen' a kind of laissez faire that the chaos of daily life organises. It makes the city a pleasant city to be. |

I found a nice link on the world wide web where one can order bulbs or just read about tulips and bulbs and get some gardening ideas. Follow this link: "http://www.tulipworld.com/home.asp" to Tulipworld Amsterdam. Just take a look at that site and be amazed by the many varietes of bulbs: tulips in all different size, shape and color, dahlia's etc.
Even if your not interested in bying tulips, the site is fun reading. As it is written on one of the pages: Tulipmania The most famous of all bulbs, the tulip, has been the cause of a major financial crisis in the Netherlands only a few decades after it was introduced in our regions at the end of the 16th century. It originally came from eastern Mediterranean regions, which at that time -- a very prosperous time in The Netherlands -- were the source of many exotic products. For the rich and the famous the tulip was a status symbol. The popularity of the tulip soared and soon the demand skyrocketed. In 1636, people started using the tulip to speculate with, indebting themselves to buy the bulbs at very high prices and selling them for even higher ones. Prices went as high as the prices of big houses along the canals in Amsterdam. Nowadays one floor in such a house already costs more than one million guilders. The reversal of their fortune was reached on February 3rd 1637, when for the first time, a collection of very exclusive tulips remained unsold. Other cases followed and the speculative bubble was quickly pierced. |
