Leeuwarden dates as far back as the Middle Ages. In the first half of the 9th century first the settlement "Villa Lantarde" was mentioned, this was the first note about the village later known as Leeuwarden. Leeuwarden means as much as "mounted lee grounds", the spelling of Leeuwarden knows more than 200 different ways of writing.
The city has moats, old houses along them and some new buildings outside the city center. |
| Stadhouder court with "Us Heit" (our father) | This is the old city hall. In front of it Willem Lodewijk, duke of Nassau, who has played a signifcant role in the history of Leeuwarden. |
Leeuwarden is known for its statue of a cow, called Us Mem, (our mum), therefor a pic of some cows. |
