Small mondial city, small but very agreable. This pearl of the country triangle formed by France, Germany and Belgium combines the profits of a provincial town with the mondaine air of his mondial population. It has a proud indepence state and an open view on the world. Home affairs are neatly arranged with an important role on European politics. The contrast between provincial and metropolitan is even seen in the ducal country, despite the fact that some say Luxembourg country is little more than the capital. Almost a quarter of the whole of the country lives in Luxembourg city. Main employers are banks, insurance- and trade companies. The European institutes of politics have grown to an economical factor that cannot be denied, and trade in money and tourism are also a factor.
The location of Luxembourg is unique. It is built on a flat rock, high above the deep gorges through which the river Alzette and Petrusse flow. A series of imposing bridges and viaducts connect the different parts of the city. |
Luxembourg-city was far more than we anticepated for. So some day in future, we must go back....Well, there are worse things one has to do... ;-)
My hubby wanted to see the palace of the grand duke, so that s were we strowled to.
We found it strange, to see such a great palace right in the middle of the city. No lovely gardens, just pavement.
But then again, I know the Duke lives in a nice castle in Colmar on the mountain (a very small village dominated by the castle)
When we rode in the little tourist city sight train through the city we heard the story told of how Luxembourg became the city as we know it. In short we heard this:
Melusina is said to have been the wife of the founder of Luxembourg, Count Siegfried. When they married, she had one particular request, namely that Siegfried must leave her alone for one full day and night every month, and that he should not ask or try to find out what she was doing. Of course, Melusina was such a beautiful girl, that Siegfried could not refuse her this one small wish, and all went well for years and years, when on each first Wednesday of the month, Melusina would retire into her chambers in the "Casemates" (a network of caverns underneath the city) not to be seen again until early light on Thursday. But one day, Siegfried's curiosity got the better of him. Wondering what on Earth she might be doing alone all the time, he peeped through the keyhole, and was shocked to see that Melusina was lying in the bathtub, with a fishtail hanging over the rim. As you all know, mermaids like Melusina, have a very keen sixth sense, which tells them instantly that they are being watched, and thus she recognised her husband through the door, and jumped out of the window into the river Alzette below, never to be seen again ... except every now and then, some people say they saw a beautiful girl's head pop out of the river, and a fishtail rippling the calm waters of the river Alzette.
We visited Luxembourg city again last April/May. This time we just strowled through the city, going from high to low city. See t-logue for photographs I took this time! |
